Reflection: This photo gallery was my way of remixing the in class compare and contrast essay. The original essay compares the Serena Williams nike ad with the Katy Perry popchips ad. The Serena Williams ad empowers women to be who they are and that outside appearances do not matter because what's inside is what makes us strong, while the Katy Perry ad makes women feel like they cannot have “handles” and that they need to be skinny. My goal was to illustrate how many women are oppressed and affected by the media. I decided to take photographs of two of my friends in similar situations. Elizabeth (on the left) is someone who lives life with the message of the Serena Williams ad as her mantra, while Emma (on the right) is a girl who is not confident, believes she can't do anything, and feels that she needs to be someone she isn't all because she is heavily influenced by media like the Katy Perry ad. As someone who, is able to acknowledge that I have my own super powers, it is hard to watch others who are unable to see their own self worth. Because of this, I feel the need to try and raise awareness of the fact that we do not need to listen to the media. Most importantly, we need to find our own “super powers” and use them to pull others up.
